Ras na hEireann U.S.A.

translates to the Race of Ireland and the USA

Though after this morning’s run, I’m pretending it translates to the Race in Torrential Race and Minor Flooding!

Pre-race = warm, dry, Irish for the day

Somehow Jared and I ended up taking too long to get ready and were running really late.  We missed the opportunity to take the $2 T to Somerville for the race and ended up having to take an expensive cab ride.  I was getting a little worried during drive.  Somehow we arrived 4 minutes before the start!

So late that we actually had to run 1/4 of a mile to get to the starting line in time!

At least that meant less time standing out in the cold rain!

The race was fun.  Despite the nasty weather, the runners were all in good spirits.  I left my Garmin at home so I have no idea how fast I ran.  The course was really crowded and I didn’t want to worry about weaving through to try to improve my time.  My main focus was avoiding puddles.

I had wrapped my feet with saran wrap so that my feet could stay dry if water got through the mesh spots on my sneakers.  Once we got to the final 1/2 mile of the race and we forced to run down a narrow bike path that was completely flooded in some areas, my saran wrap efforts didn’t matter.  Water was up to my ankles and my feet were SOAKED.

Since Jared and I started at the back of the pack, most of the bars hosting post-race parties had lines when we finished the 5K race.  We went to a cafe to warm up and plot our next move.

Hot chai and a croissant was the perfect solution.  Plus I removed my socks, shoes, and a few layers and attempted to dry off.

We managed to locate a few friends who also braved the rain to run in their Irish best.  I had to put my damp gear back on and then we all walked to nearby bar for a victory toast.  One beer wasn’t enough to help me forget about my squishy feet.  We made the best of the wet race experience, but I was more than ready to go home.

The T ride home was hell!  The only thing that kept me going was the thought of dry pajamas and my warm bed.  Plus I was powered by a few laughs at my ridiculous looking boyfriend who was called St. Patrick by a fellow T rider.

Way to go! I can’t even imagine. . . we didn’t leave the house until 4, and that was to dart out of the car to Trader Joe’s, the Thirsty Scholar, and home! What a washout of a weekend!

Great job to both of you. Jared looks like Jared…haha. Beyond the rain it seems like you made the best of a crummy day. Hope you got Matt’s recipe for the banana foster. I want to know all about it.

What a fun race!! Actually, I think the “Being late” part worked out in your favor. I have only run in a few races, but I do remember being freezing before several of them, and being jealous of those who got there late!

Love the shamrocks, by the way :)

What a day to run! Good for you for braving the elements. It does look like you had fun though. I’m afraid I would have been so cold, it would have ruined the fun of playin gin the rain!
