The Cows Were Laughing

003

I lunched on spicy black bean soup and an Arnold Thin with garlic herb Laughing Cow cheese spread on top.  In some field somewhere, the cows were laughing at me when I tried to spread the cheese.  I made a huge mess.  Cheese on me, cheese on my desk, cheese on my recycle bin when I dropped the wrapper.  Ugh.  But tasty once I cleaned up!

004

Last night I carved my first pineapple and this afternoon I reaped the benefits of my hard work.

005

Hit up the bookstore and came across this amazing item!

006

I don’t know what I’ll write about, but it will have to be special to become part of this cute little book.

This dress is super short so I paired it with leggings instead of tights.  I don’t know what I’ll do when warm weather finally arrives.  I’m not brave enough to wear this as a mini-dress, plus it’s semi sheer so I need a slip to go underneath.  Oh well, I have plenty of time to think on it cuz Boston won’t warm up for months.

Off to the gym and back to my regularly scheduled Half Marathon training.  I ran 2 miles on the treadmill for speed.   Today I stayed at 7.2 mph, and I think my super short speed runs could be faster.  I’ve got to keep pushing myself if I want to meet my time goal.  I stretched and sat in the sauna for 5 minutes.

Cows aren’t laughing when it comes to the unethical treatment of animals at slaughter houses.  It’s Vegetarian Challenge Day #2 and I educated myself about our furry and feathered friends.

Adopt a Vegetarian Diet… For Animals

Why? (facts from the Humane Society of the United States’ Guide to Vegetarian Eating)

  • 10 billion land animals are raised and killed for meat, eggs, and milk.
  • I refrained from posting any of the graphic pictures and videos from slaughter houses.  Use your imagination.  It’s really gross and turns my stomach.
  • Chickens, pigs, turkeys, cows, etc. have personalities, feel pain, suffer from boredom and frustration, and experience joy.
  • No federal law protects animals from cruelty on the farm and most states exempt customary agricultural practices (no matter how abusive) from the scope of their animal cruelty laws.
  • 95% of the 10 billion land animals killed are birds.
  • The number of aquatic animals killed for food is unreported, but is estimated to be over 10 billion.
  • More offensive facts and photos are available.  Follow this link to learn more.  Since this is such a sensitive subject, I educated myself, but I don’t want to include too much disturbing info in this blog post.

Short and sweet, but you get the point.  The meat industry isn’t nice. Makes me think twice before buying anything from the deli counter…

I love fresh pineapple! I really want one of those pineapple corkscrew things. They look like they would make chopping the pineapple more pleasent.

Cute dress! I have a couple that are too short for me to dare to wear on my own. I do the same – pair them with black tights or sometimes I’ll even wear a pair of rolled up jeans underneath. :)

I love the mini dress with the leggings! So my style! I hate cold weather, but LOVES the clothes. Oversized sweaters with leggings and scarves..*sighs* =)

Also, LOVING the book. I always go to Barnes & Nobles to look at all the cool journals, bookmarks, and other neat accessories! Cool find!!

The dress would look good over a pair of skinny jeans or short jean shorts with the frayed edges of the shorts just sticking out from under the dress.

I love Laughing Cow, but I agree, it can get messy!

That is really sad :( I feel like I’ve been slipping off the no meat wagon (I’ve been craving it and have been so tempted to have some chicken or turkey when my family eats it) and I needed a reminder why I stopped eating it in the first place. Thinking about the meatball I had at Christmas grosses me out…

    That journal is amazing!

Thanks for the info about animals. Food, Inc really brought a lot of this to attention for me. I have significantly cut back on the amount of meat that I eat since seeing that movie. I like to think that every little bit counts, until I can make a more substantial change in my lifestyle.

I’m enjoying all of the information about vegetarianism and the food industry. I think it’s definitely time for us to make not only healthy, but responsible food choices.
