I was in a BAD mood last night and didn’t feel like blogging. I didn’t even feel like cooking dinner and told Jared he was in charge. He took the easy way out and ran across the street to get Pad Thai. Mine came with shrimp the first time around so Jared ran back across the street to get a new order. What a nice guy!
While I don’t want to get into all of the reasons I was upset last night, I do need to rant for a couple of paragraphs. I belong to a women-only gym. I thought the entire point of the gym was to make women feel comfortable in an exercise environment. When I got to spin class last night, I was really down and out over my afternoon. I wanted to work out my frustrations and really sweat. That being said, I forgot a tank top and decided I’d feel much more comfortable working out in capris and a sports bra.
I’ve exercised in a sports bra since I was a freshman in college, at every cheerleading practice. But never in my life have I been made to feel more uncomfortable about myself and my choice of attire than in my spin class last night. As soon as I took my shirt off, the instructor made a comment about giving someone a golf ball to throw. (At me?!? I don’t know but that’s what it seemed like she meant) Incredibly inappropriate!
I am at the gym. I sweat a lot. I have fitness goals and I want to work hard. No one, especially not the women who will most likely be strolling around the locker room butt ass naked as soon as class is over, have any right to judge me on my exercise attire. I do not care what anyone else chooses to wear at the gym. I’m not going to judge. I’m there working out for me and I’m just trying to make myself comfortable. And hey, I work HARD and I do have visible abdominal muscles so deal with it.
I am SO angry and now I’m torn between never attending her class again or attending next week and sitting front and center on my spin bike, wearing my favorite little sports bra and matching spandex shorts that were my go-to practice outfit in my cheering days.

Ok, my venting is over. Thanks for being patient with me.
I had something to smile about when I got out of the shower and saw two lazy creatures snuggling in bed. Haha, no this picture is not posed! Jared and Miles were really sleeping like this. Though if you ask Jared, he was attempting to sleep and Miles was succeeding in being a pest.

I ate some raspberry yogurt before running out the door.

Mid-morning, I snacked on some grapes.
I’m trying to decide what to eat for lunch and what to do for a workout. Hmmm….
Don’t forget:
*Dinner on 2/6/2010*
We have reservations at Grezzo on 2/6/2010 at 7 pm. Please e-mail me and let me know if you are definitely planning on coming because Grezzo is small and would prefer an exact count. I based my original number off of responses from when I posted about this dinner last week. (I had to put a credit card down for the reservation so this is kind of super important!)

Ohmigosh girl that is awful! Can you complain about her to the front desk? Then, I would go sit in front of her in your sports bra!

Sorry about your poopy afternoon. I think you should sit front and center next time wearing a sports bra and spandex shorts. Done care about what everyone else thinks! Eff ‘em.
I think I’m a little slow becuase I don’t get the golf ball joke.

Julie: I don’t think the golf ball thing was a funny reference. I really think it was meant as an object to throw at me. And I have terrible reflexes so I never would’ve been able to catch it and probably would’ve gotten whacked.

Ugh sorry to hear about that. I’ve worn just a sports bra to spin before when i forgot a shirt…what is the big deal??

I’d just brush off her comments. In the long run, if you’re secure with yourself and your body, her comments shouldn’t matter. Don’t skip a class because of that. Why should your workouts suffer or why should you stop doing something you enjoy? If it was Healthworks and it bothers you enough, forward them this post. I’m sure they’d like to see how many people that comment actually reached.

So sorry about the gym – you are completely right, you should be able to wear what you are comfortable in without judgment. How rude. It reminds me of parties at work when I load up on veggies and fruit instead of cheesy, greasy eats and get mean comments. Why should you feel bad about working hard and being comfortable in your own skin and choices??
I already told MelissaNibbles, but I’m in for Grezzo!

I didn’t much get the golfball reference either, but she made you feel uncomfortable and she was rude in her class which like you said is completely unacceptable. Just use that to fuel and work even harder through your next workout!

Thanks you guys! This is the same instructor who gets mad if people talk during class and threatens to turn to music up louder. Which is fine by me…loud music pumps me up. Whatever.
Glad you guys are supportive of my bitching and venting!

What an awful thing for the instructor to say! Honestly, I would recommend talking to a manager at the gym. Not only was the instructor’s comment personally hurtful, but it was incredibly unprofessional. You workout in whatever your little heart desires!!!

Wow I’m really sorry that happened to you at the gym. I have been made to feel uncomfortable in exercises classes before and it really puts a damper on your future motivation to go! I would probably never go again but then again I like your front and center idea better. Also…I don’t really get the golf ball reference?
Wish I could come on Saturday but I can’t. I really want to meet you guys sometime!

I’m sorry about that, Melissa! That’s incredibly rude coming from an employee of the gym. If I went to a woman’s only gym I would definitely never feel uncomfortable about working out in a sports bra. It’s strange that some people would look down upon that. People run out in the open wearing only sports bras, so why not at a female-only gym? Just know that you didn’t do anything wrong. I’m sure it was a case of jealously towards your rockin’ abs! haha!

I totally know how you feel… it always seems like whack-jobs get away with doing the weirdest things (like walking around the locker room totally naked) and the minute you do something a little out of your element… someone has to say something. I think you should go and rock what you were wearing again. If something else is said… you should def. let her supervisor know. You go to an all women gym to not have to feel uncomfortable. I wish I lived in Boston to join you all at Grezzo!

Ugh, what a rude thing to say! I feel like sometimes like to bring down others with good bodies, even if they’re in shape themselves. I’d say go to class in the spandex outfit- show her she can’t faze you!

That is incredibly rude of those at your gym. You should be able to wear whatever you are comfortable in to workout.

That is obnoxious, but I can say with assurance that you should NOT talk to the manager (since I assume we’re talking about the same gym) she is awful and unhelpful!
I say go with the spandex and bra…
Anyway, for me watching you and your “visible abs” would be super motivating – I’m working on getting mine that way.

By the way, I’m so sad I can’t make the meet-up. I’d love to come next time.

I agree with everyone that that is not only annoying, but totally uncalled for!! You should be able to wear whatever you want….you look fantastic so you should flaunt it! I happen to think everyone should flaunt what they have if they’re confident enough to do so, whether they’re in perfect shape or not….but especially when you have visible abs like you do!! She was probably just jealous:)

I say front and center wearing the sports bra and spandex shorts. I would KILL to be able to wear something like that while I’m working out! I, personally, am always jealous of the people who can…but I’d never make a rude comment! Boo to the instructor.

Ugh. That sucks. I have to say, I used to be that person that 100% cared what people thought, but now I don’t anymore. I wear what is comfortable and makes me feel empowered and sexy. I probably wouldn’t wear just a sports bra because personally, my abs aren’t wear I want them yet, but I do often wear little shorts. One, because practically I like them for a good yoga session and two, because I have moments of feeling down and dressing in a way that makes me feel sexy (FOR MYSELF) is a good pickme up. Hang in there.

I love the idea to sit front and center in your next class – don’t let what she said bother you! You are much stronger than that – she was probably jealous!
