- Roast profile: A central American single-origin varietal from Bill McAlpin’s LaMinita estate. Considered a premium coffee, it is meant to be roasted light to light-medium to accentuate its characteristics, which are a pleasant acidity, sweetness, and nice body. A very clean coffee with a smooth finish!

To properly test these beans, they were ground in a separate grinder, just prior to brewing. The beans were VERY aromatic! The first pot of coffee to test these beans was brewed using 6 oz. of filtered water.
I sweetened my cup of coffee with 2% milk and 1 packet of Splenda. To my undignified palate, I thought the Costa Rica LaMinita tasted awesome. I couldn’t pick out any specific flavors, but I was quite happy with each sip. I tend to steer clear of coffee once it reaches room temperature, but this brew was even good when it was luke warm. Because of the nice body, I wasn’t left with a funky coffee after taste.
Jared’s dad Bob, a true coffee afficienado, helped taste test and drank his first few sips black. He noticed the very pleasant acidity and the mellow, but full-bodied flavor. Bob even put the coffee to his own personal test: He added Swiss Miss hot chocolate mix, and found that it still tasted fantastic!
Here are some important facts to make sure you’re getting the most out of each and every pot of coffee you brew:
- Use 6 fl. oz of water for every 2 tablespoons of ground coffee.
- It is CRUCIAL to use filtered water or spring water to brew your coffee. All it takes is one bad mineral or contaminant in your water supply to ruin coffee.
- At brewing, water should be between 195 and 205 degrees.
- Use coarser grinds for French presses, electric perk brewers, etc.
- Use medium grinds for drip and auto drip brewers.
- Use finer grinds for espresso, Turkish brews, etc.
- Buy whole beans and grind at home if possible. Pre-ground coffee becomes stale very quickly.
- Only grind the amount of beans you need for brewing.
- Store your coffee in an air-tight container.

Wow. I use a lot less water per tablespoon. That’s probably why I’m bouncing off the walls and sweating like a beast after I drink my coffee. I like it REALLY strong though!
This flavor sounds great!

I also thought this coffee was delicious! It had a really smooth finish, and, to borrow a phrase from Budweiser, its drinkability didn’t dissipate with its heat.

In defense of my love of coffee…. I admit I do put a hot chocolate packet in my first cup of coffee in the morning as Mel reported. This is a throw back, and homage, to my late mother who always gave me hot chocolate to start my mornings. I cannot seem to be able to break this habit (not that I really want to…). Any coffee I drink after that first cup must be BLACK no sweetener. Therefore it must be GOOD coffee. This Costa Rica LaMinita coffee from Boston Common Coffee is EXCELLENT COFFEE! I enjoyed several cups of this coffee au-natural. It definitely ranks up there with some of the finest coffees I have had the pleasure of tasting. Um, Mel…. be sure to bring some with you when you guys come for Christmas!

I don’t have a very discerning palate when it comes to coffees. But when it’s reeeeally good, I can tell. I don’t drink coffee much anymore, but I had a cup over the weekend when we were out walking in Harvard Square. I got so shaky! Definitely not used to caffeine right now!

Wellllll I use Maxwell House
Yep! I turn to cheap coffee for my caffeine fix, but when I decide to splurge and buy the really good stuff, I’m never disappointed. Thanks for the great tips. I do always use purified water, and I put my coffee in a sealed container, in the fridge. My container says to use 1 T per 6 ounces, but 2 sounds much better to me!

Carol: Boston Common Coffee has 3 locations in Boston, the North End, Financial District, and Downtown Crossing. But if you browse around online and get back to me, a bag or two can make its way to Blackstone by Christmas!

I never use filtered water and apparently I really should. I’m going to try it with the Brita water tomorrow morning instead of tap water! I’ll see if I can tell a difference.
